By Friedrich Schleiermacher. Translated by Terrence N. Tice, Catherine L.
Kelsey, and Edwina Lawler. Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press, This publication of an up-to-date, critical English translation of Schleiermacher's Glaubenslehre is a major event in contemporary scholarship in the fields of theology, church history, and religious studies. Prior to the appearance of this two-volume set, the only complete translation available in English was the edition prepared in the late s by a team of British scholars and edited by Hugh Ross Mackintosh and James Stuart Stewart.
The Tice-Kelsey-Lawler edition is a significant improvement over its predecessor, rendering Schleiermacher's opus into a clear and elegant English text that is faithful to the German original. Explanatory footnotes illuminate the reasons behind certain translation decisions and provide commentary on the backgrounds and meanings of Schleiermacher's proposals and concepts in Romanticism and German Idealism.
The editors supply numerous cross-references to other contemporaneous and antecedent sources. Readers will encounter here the new standard text of Christian Faith in English, packaged in a critical study edition that reflects leading scholarship in Schleiermacher's theology and in nineteenth-century Protestant thought.
This release should inspire fresh scrutiny of Schleiermacher's contribution to modern Protestantism. As Christine Helmer points out "Schleiermacher for Lutherans," Lutheran Quarterly 29 , — , Lutherans are inclined to object to Schleiermacher's contention that religious experience originates in a pre-linguistic awareness of creaturely finitude that manifests itself in the form of, in the words of a locution he made famous, a "feeling of absolute dependence" upon the infinite God.

Christian Faith (Two-Volume Set) (Hardback)
Friedrich Schleiermacher was the founder of Protestant liberalism. His description of the divine as the feeling of "absolute dependence" set the stage for all subsequent attempts to defend the Christian religion against post-Enlightment skepticism toward the truth of religious claims. College and seminary level students will profit from reading the primary source, as opposed to secondary treatments.
I use portions of the text in an upper division course in modern theology for Bible and theology majors, knowing that the effort made now will benefit them greatly when they get to seminary. If you want to have anything to do with systematic theology, this is a must read. This last expression includes the God-consciousness in the self-consciousness in such a way that, quite in accordance with the above analysis, the two cannot be separated from each other.
The feeling of absolute dependence becomes a clear self-consciousness only as this idea comes simultaneously into being. In this sense it can indeed be said that God is given to us in feeling in an original way; and if we speak of an original revelation of God to man or in man, the meaning will always be just this, that, along with absolute dependence, which characterizes not only man but all temporal existence, there is given to man also the immediate self-consciousness of it, which becomes a consciousness of God.
They are supra-rational in the respect in which everything experiential is supra-rational. This also agrees very well with the story of the Creation, which knows nothing of any intervening deliberation and deciding choice, but keeps contemplation entirely to the end, where it appears simply as absolute approval, without ascribing to God any contemplation of what He did not make or any comparison of the real world with those possible worlds.
These books only share in it; and inspiration in this narrower sense, conditioned as it is by the purity and completeness of the apostolic grasp of Christianity, covers the whole of the official apostolic activity thence derived.
None the less, the real meaning of the facts would be clearer if the Old Testament followed the New as an appendix, for the present relative position of the two makes the demand, not obscurely, that we must first work our way through the whole of the Old Testament if we are to approach the New by the right avenue.

Feeling in this higher sense as distinguished from "organic" sensibility, Empfindung , which is the minimum of distinct antithetic consciousness, the cessation of the antithesis of subject and object, constitutes likewise the unity of our being, in which the opposite functions of cognition and volition have their fundamental and permanent background of personality and their transitional link.
It is fascinating to observe how Schleiermacher develops these themes in Christian Faith. What goes missing in Schleiermacher's theology—and this is the root of the Lutheran concern—is the precedence and antecedence for faith of the external word of justifying grace through which God communicates his victorious righteousness and awakens sinners for the life of faith.
